Biography
Dr. Stephanie Burns’ collegiate career began at ºìÐÓÖ±²¥app State University where she explored a variety of career options from animal science to pre-med before graduating with a B.S. in physiology and being accepted into the physical therapy program at the University of ºìÐÓÖ±²¥app Health Sciences Center. Upon graduation, Dr. Burns accepted a staff PT position at the VA Medical Center in ºìÐÓÖ±²¥app City. While the VA served as her primary place of employment for the next 33 years she also worked part-time as an adjunct instructor in the OU PT program, as well as a staff PT for home health agencies, nursing homes and various hospitals including Integris, Bone and Joint and Mercy. Working at the VA afforded her the opportunity to continue her education and she subsequently received a M.A. in anthropology from OU followed by a PhD in Allied Health Sciences from OUHSC in 2006. Her interest in research in general stems from her background in the basic sciences and in PT research in particular from her opportunity to spend a student clinical internship at Washington University in St. Louis working with Dr. Shirley Sahrmann PT, PhD, FAPTA. Her areas of clinical interest relate to neurorehabilitation and wound care and she has been fortunate to spend the majority of her clinical career in a teaching hospital on a health science center campus surrounded by clinical experts. In her non-professional life Dr. Burns enjoys butterfly watching, travelling and spending time with her canine companions.
